Quivering in the shadows, four terrified dogs are - only just - alive, but no doubt forever scarred by the lengths they had to go to in order to beat starvation.
This is the horror that met police and animal rescuers at a dog breeding kennel in Hyderabad earlier this month, after it was deserted by the owners who left their canine dependents - bred for money - to die a slow and painful death.
Six dogs are believed to have lost their lives and an investigation into the appalling case, which has thrown scrutiny on India's dog breeding laws, has been launched.
The survivors include a terrified pug which can be seen in a rescue video depicting the harrowing scenes.
That dog, along with the others that made it, are now in foster care, being treated for severe healthy issues and trauma.
During the rescue, police were accompanied by the Hyderabad arm of the animal charity Blue Cross of India, with a video of their findings later posted to the activist group Animal Warriors of India's Facebook page.
It has left the 33,000 people that have watched it shocked and appalled.
A spokesperson for Blue Cross of India was unable to comment on the case as proceedings are ongoing.
