New York: Tammy Green, 45, sentenced to prison for arson fire that killed her sister's pets

NEW YORK -- A 45-year-old woman was sentenced in Rensselaer County Court Friday to state prison on arson and animal cruelty charges, District Attorney Joel Abelove's office said.

Tammy Green of Castleton was sentenced by Judge Andrew Ceresia to two years and four months to seven years in prison.

Green pleaded guilty Aug. 17 to third-degree arson, a felony, and cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor, for a Feb. 2016 incident in which she set fire to her sister's house.

The sister's dog and three cats died in the fire, according to the release. Two firefighters were injured.

“This defendant caused tremendous damage and endangered others,” said District Attorney Joel Abelove in a news release. “Her callous and wanton actions took the lives of three innocent animals and injured two first responders. Thankfully, no one else was killed.”

Although it appears she's being sent to prison for killing the animals, she's really being sent away for the arson. She most likely would've been given probation if it were just the animals having been killed.
