North Carolina: The owner of the dog shot by Julius Potts sets up a GoFundMe to help pay for a lawyer to ensure that Potts is prosecuted for Felony Animal Cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA -- On Saturday, October the 22nd, I came home to the news that my dog had been shot and no one knew where he was. Bear had wandered through the woods over to a neighbor's house and the man shot him as he was walking home.

My mother rushed over there the moment my other neighbor called and said what happened. My mom confronted him and he said he was trying to get into his dog's pen, which is a completely closed in tall chain link fence so it would be impossible for him to get into or jump over.

He also denied knowing his whereabouts.

My dad then called the sheriff's department and confronted the man too. He told my father the same story, he was trying to get into his dog's pen and the he didn't know where he was. My dad started to look for Bear but couldn't find him. I got there after the deputy did and he told us that he would talk to the man and see what his story was.

After talking to the deputy his story changed. He now said that Bear was barking, growling, showing his teeth, and charged at him so he shot him in self defense. Also saying Bear ran into a barn to die when he didn't know in his original story.

When he told us this my whole family was disgusted. We all knew the man was lying through his teeth to cover himself. Bear has never been aggressive to anyone. He was only a big, sweet, spoiled German Shepherd who loved everyone and only wanted to be their friend.

In the time Bear was on this Earth he made so many friends along the way and we all have been grieving his passing. We was never a pet to us, he was a family member. While nothing will ever bring him back, I will always have his memories to get me through this. From the day I drove to pick him up to the last time I hugged him goodbye as I left to start my day I will always keep them close to my heart.

That is why I am asking for help and support to make sure my innocent Bear gets justice and this man pays for the crime he committed. I cannot reveal many details about the criminal case at this time, or I would share. We are making great progress though and I will post updates when the time is right.

The man has a known history of killing innocent dogs. According to the neighbors, he has even shot across the road to kill one. This man has killed other dogs before just to do it, and the neighbor's are willing to help give testimonies to make sure this man is brought to justice for his actions.

With your help we can make this a reality. I have made this gofundme to help cover the cost of the lawyer and other expenses as we pursue him in criminal and civil court. Our lawyer is out of Raleigh and she is a specialist in animal cases. With the evidence stacked against him and a great lawyer on our side, all we need now is the funds to bring this man to justice.

Please, donate if you could and share this link to get the word out that you cannot kill an innocent animal and get away with it. We all will be beyond grateful however you decide to support us in this time of need. Justice for Bear!

With the court date coming up much more quickly than originally thought I have lowered the goal to half of what it was. To file a civil suit against him it will cost me $3000 up front and anytime after that my lawyer has a rate of $400 per hour. I don't know how much this will cost me in the end but I am going to need all the help I can get.
