"There were puppies and dead other animals laying there on top of each other. I can't tell you I was in tears right away," Walsh said.
Sonya Walsh is the owner of Hot Dogs Pet Grooming in Mott and was on the scene with the Hettinger County Sheriff and Regent Fire when they discovered dogs that seemed to be neglected for quite some time
"The dogs were just covered in their own urine and feces," Walsh said. "Their feet and legs are really sore. You couldn't even tell what color some of the dogs were."
Hettinger county Sheriff Sarah Warner said it's an open investigation and they're still trying to piece together what exactly happened.
She said the couple, who has been identified as William and Mary Ziegler, will see their day in court.
"They are charged with criminal cruelty and also abuse and neglect of an animal."
Julie Schirado from Furry Friends Rockin Rescue in Bismarck, along with other rescue groups, are saving the day by giving the dogs an opportunity to be adopted. But, as she explains, it's not going to be an easy task.
"These guys don't even know what it's like to be on a leash," Schirado said. "Whoever takes these dogs and helps us with them has a lot of work ahead of them. You are not getting a little cuddly puppy that you would from a store."
And for Sonya Walsh, she's just happy a bad situation is turning out to be a good one.
The couple was released from the Southwest Multi-Correctional Facility. They will be due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 1.
If anyone would like to donate or foster some of the animals, you can contact Furry Friends Rockin Rescue at (701)-471-0155 (ffrrinc@gmail.com) or Bakken Paws at bakkenpaws@outlook.com
