Local news outlets report that court documents show 21-year-old Curtis Kinzey was arrested and charged with animal cruelty on Wednesday.
WAVY-TV reports police went to the home at 1605 Cutty Sark Road after receiving a call from someone saying Kinzey had killed the family pet.
Arriving officers found the cat's body thrown in the trash.
An arrest warrant says Kinzey told officers that he killed his cat by poisoning it, then choking the animal to death.
Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice president of PETA's Cruelty Investigations Department, said the allegations are troubling.
“Anyone who is capable of poising a cat, strangling a cat… is a danger to our community,” Nachminovitch said “So we’re very, very thankful this is being taken seriously and that this person is behind bars.”
Additionally, Nachminovitch said the fact where Kinzey killed his pet – an animal he knew –makes the crime that more disconcerting.
“Anyone who is capable of any harming any animal -- let alone the animal who depends on them for everything. For necessities of life: food, water, shelter, veterinary care and safety,” Nachminovitch said. “Someone who is capable of intentionally committing a violent act towards an animal who loves them, who depends on them is a sick individual.”
A reporter attempted to question a woman at the home on Cutty Sark Road on Friday, but was told to get off the property.
Documents state that Kinzey committed a Class 6 felony and will have a hearing on December 15. He’s currently being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Facility without bond.
