Washington: Shih Tzu named Mocha has to have his leg amputated after it's ripped apart in pit bull attack at homeless camp

WASHINGTON -- Friends of Rainier Vet, we are reaching out to you on behalf of a sweet little Shih Tzu named Mocha who lives with his mom in a homeless encampment near our clinic.

Weighing in at just 8 pounds, Mocha (age 6) was attacked by a much larger dog (a pit bull) who lives in the same area.

Mocha was bit so deeply on his neck and right shoulder that his leg is broken, almost beyond repair. The safest, smoothest, and easiest option for this precious pooch is to amputate his leg, the cost of which is estimated at $2,500–$3,000.

We are in the process of setting up our non-profit, Rainier Animal Fund, to cover costs in these types of situations, but our paperwork is still in process with the IRS. Mocha’s mom—who also was injured in the attack—could use your help to pay for Mocha’s treatments. Otherwise, she will have to give up Mocha to animal control, despite Mocha being a very innocent victim in this incident.

Mocha is in extreme pain, and medication isn’t helping much. The sooner we take him to surgery, the sooner he can be on the road to recovery. In this week of Thanksgiving, your support would be so appreciated to help this pup continue to live a healthy and vibrant life. Any amount is helpful; please send donations to Rainier Veterinary Hospital, 815 Rainier Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98144. THANK YOU!!! #HelpMocha #RainierVet

UPDATE
Thank you for all of your support for Mocha, a 6-year-old Shih Tzu who was attacked by a large dog in a homeless encampment where they both live. Mocha was in severe pain since coming in on Monday morning, and he cried and moaned every time he was touched. Pain medications were not helping.

To bring comfort to this sweet little dog, we performed the necessary surgeries—the amputation of Mocha’s right front leg, neutering, and a cystotomy to remove a bladder stone. Mocha is no longer crying, and he is in much better spirits post-surgery. He’s eating and drinking as well.

The surgeries and care amount to $2,000, and Mocha’s mom still needs your help. Thanks to your donations, we have raised $300—thank you! We are hoping to raise another $1,700 to cover the costs.

If you would like to contribute to the Save Mocha Fund, we would be so appreciative. Donations can be made via PayPal, by calling us with your credit card (206-324-4144), or by mailing a check to Rainier Veterinary Hospital, 815 Rainier Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98144.
