Another Dog Attack In Port Royal, Bull Mastiff Has Biting History

PORT ROYAL, SC -- A second dog attack on a child in a week's time in Port Royal.

The first was the brutal attack by a Pit Bull on Daniella Ramirez last Thursday.  Then, two days later, an 18-month-old was attacked by a Bull Mastiff just a few miles away.  The child was taken to the hospital but is going to be okay.

According to reports, this same Bull Mastiff, attacked a three-year-old in the same yard back in October.  The victim's family wants to know why the dog was still there after the first bite.

Amy Coniglio describes her big family gathering Saturday as happy and cheerful until screaming began from this part of the backyard.

"And just all of a sudden the dog came through the bottom of the fence and grabbed a hold of my nephew's pant leg,” Coniglio said.

The Bull Mastiff, known as Gir, tried pulling the 18-month-old under the fence, but Amy's sister who was watching her son in the backyard ran to his rescue.

"She kicked the dog to get it to release my nephew and then her friend kicked the fence to get the dog to release which the dog finally did,” Coniglio said.

What infuriates Amy most about this is it's the same dog who bit her son four months ago.  She filed paperwork with Port Royal police and the dog was quarantined 10 days, but then returned next door.

A dog lover and owner herself, Coniglio thinks it's time the biting dog go away.

"I feel that after the first bite, she should have been taken away.  Because the way my parents brought us up, once a dog bites it's just a matter of when it's going to happen again,” she said.

Looking back, she's thankful in both cases, adults were nearby to react fast.  Had they not, she may be telling a much more tragic story.

"It only takes seconds to maul a child or scar them or maul them to death,” Coniglio said.

According to Port Royal police, the owner, Katie Gottschalk, was arrested and charged with dangerous animal attack on humans.  She was booked and released from the Beaufort County Detention Center Wednesday.

Police say the dog is back with her.
