FLORIDA -- Deputy shoots, wounds pit bull after attack: A St. Johns County Sheriff's deputy fired on two pit bulls Sunday afternoon, wounding one, after the dogs bit one victim in the hip and knee and were in pursuit of another victim, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
Deputy Ronnie Lester wrote in the report that he was called to assist St. Johns County Fire Rescue with a medical call on Pellicer Road off County Road 208 in which the victim reported being bitten by one of the pits. As the man was being treated, a bicyclist approached the scene, chased by the same dogs.
The dogs approached the emergency workers, and Lester said he yelled at them and then fired four rounds at them when they got within 10 feet. The shots wounded one of the dogs, and they both ran away.
The owners were located and told to provide proof of rabies vaccination to county Animal Control, according to the report.
