FLORIDA -- A Tampa police officer shot a pit bull that charged at him Monday night but neither the officer nor the dog was seriously injured.
A police officer had been called to a home, 8116 N. Ola Ave., to check on the welfare of the resident at around 6 p.m. When the officer got to the scene, no one answered. The officer then walked around the house and found an open door in the back.
...The officer, who was not identified by the department, hollered into the house, but no one answered. As he looked closer, a 7-year-old, 75-pound pit bull charged at him, police said...
The pit bull charged and the officer retreated. But another pit bull hiding in the yard attacked the officer, police said.
The officer shot at the attacking pit bull twice. The pit bull was shot once in the right paw.
The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury, police said.
The officer was uninjured.
The case is under investigation, police said.
