Wilmington mother, son convicted of negligence in dog attacks

CA --A Wilmington mother and her son were convicted Friday of negligently allowing their dogs to bite a 14-year-old girl and maul a neighbor, prosecutors said Friday.

Stella Gonzalez Amador, 67, and Alfred Eric Torres, were sentenced at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse to three years probation and ordered to attend 24 animal cruelty classes. They are not allowed to own animals, Los Angeles City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan said.

One attack occurred July 17, 2010, in the 1300 block of North Hyatt Avenue in Wilmington as the girl walked home from school. One of the family's dogs jumped a fence and bit her on the arm, Mateljan said.

A second attack occurred on the street when a neighbor helping Amador enter her property was mauled by three of her dogs, he said.

The neighbor required surgery and stitches.

The Los Angeles city Department of Animal Services impounded three Labrador and pit-bull mix dogs.

Amador and Torres had previously been cited for failing to confine their dogs.
