INJUSTICE in Connecticut: Jessica Yazmer, who was found hoarding more than 40 animals in her basement, gets community service as "punishment"

CONNECTICUT -- A Canton woman who was arrested in July after police found 40 dogs in her apartment has been ordered to do 20 hours of community service, according to a Community Court clerk.

After several continuances, Jessica Yazmer appeared at Community Court on Wednesday. She was originally scheduled to appear July 20.

Yazmer, of 14 Center St., was charged with cruelty to animals on July 5. Police were called after neighbors heard dogs fighting, and police eventually found 40 dogs and a few cats in deplorable conditions on the property.

Town Animal Control Officer Beverly LaPlume said that she found three cages in the basement with five or six puppies in each cage and feces 1 or 2 inches thick. "None of these dogs had food or water," she said.

The dogs and cats were all put up for adoption, and most have found homes. The Simon Foundation in Bloomfield handled the adoption of the adult dogs, and the puppies were adopted from Roaring Brook Kennels in Canton.

Yazmer was listed on http://www.adoptapet.com as the contact person for RT Rescue, which bills itself as a Collinsville-based organization that rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the South.
