Charge laid in deadly pit bull attack

CANADA -- The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said Friday an individual has been charged in connection with a pit bull attack that made headlines in St. John's this month.

The force said an unnamed man, 31, is being charged under the Dog Act after an Oct. 6 incident, in which a poodle was attacked on Hayward Avenue, near downtown St. John's.

The Dog Act requires "an owner of a dog shall keep it safely tethered or penned up at all times."

The RNC said the man will appear in court at a later date.

"The court will decide the fate of the pit bull," the RNC said in a statement.

The poodle, whose lungs were punctured during the attack, died soon after it was rushed to animal hospital.
