Man shoots Rottweiler that attacked his Doxie

[This is how it's done, people! Do not blindly take your dogs out for a walk. You need to be prepared for whatever may happen. Would many people think a guy walking two Doxies would be armed and prepared like he was? He saved his dogs' lives and probably his own as well. Awesome!]

KANSAS -- A man who was walking his miniature dachshunds in west Salina on Thursday evening shot a Rottweiler that allegedly attacked one of his dogs.

Lt. Scott Siemsen, of the Salina Police Department, said Dana Gustafson, 56, was walking his dogs in the 600 block of Steahlin Avenue about 6:45 p.m. when two Rottweilers came from behind 616 Steahlin. One of the Rottweilers picked up one of the Dachshunds in its teeth and started shaking it.

Siemsen said Gustafson kicked at the Rottweiler. When that didn't work, Gustafson pulled out his .38 handgun and shot the Rottweiler in the hindquarters.

The Rottweiler let go of the Dachshund, and the second Rottweiler returned to its pen as Gustafson called 911.

Police cited the owner of the Rottweilers, Christine Cerda, for having vicious dogs running at large.

Siemsen said Gustafson had a valid concealed carry permit.

The Dachshund was treated for puncture wounds by a local veterinarian.
