Woman stabs her own pit bull to stop attack on daughter

NEW YORK — A Uniondale woman was arguing with her mother at their home Tuesday afternoon when their pit bull mix attacked the daughter, biting her in the head, Nassau police said.

Unable to pull the dog off her 21-year-old daughter, the mother stabbed the dog twice in the neck, police said. That stopped the attack, police said.

The daughter was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to be treated for several bite wounds to the scalp, police said. She was in stable condition, police said.

The Nassau police Emergency Services Unit and Hempstead Town's animal control officers took the dog to the town shelter in Wantagh.

The dog, a male estimated to be at least 18 months old, was euthanized Tuesday, said Mike Deery, Hempstead Town spokesman. "It was at the request of the owner, signed over for euthanization," he said.

No names were released, and the history of the dog was not immediately available.
