Dog that bit man in Eau Claire euthanized

WISCONSIN -- A 1-1/2 year-old German shepherd-Akita mix was euthanized Thursday, according to Eau Claire police.

The dog, named Nagwitt, was taken to Eau Claire Animal Hospital after he reportedly bit a man on the wrist Jan. 1.

The dog's owner, Kevin Helsper, surrendered the dog to the city, and the animal was placed in quarantine, which ended Wednesday.

Helsper had been ticketed for allowing the dog to run loose, and the Police Department had received reports that Nagwitt had chased children at a bus stop and a woman in a wheelchair.

Pam Yarrington, Helsper's neighbor, tried to save the dog she's tried to care for by pleading his case to city officials and contacting animal agencies to take him.
