Police shoot, kill pit bull in Ripon

CALIFORNIA -- A Ripon police officer shot and killed an escaped pit bull that was attacking a neighbor's dog Sunday morning. At 10:38, officers responded to reports of two aggressive pit bulls running loose in the 400 block of Vera Avenue. Officers said they recognized the dogs as the same ones reported running loose a day earlier.

On Saturday, the owners were contacted and the dogs returned to them. On Sunday, the owners could not be reached.

Officers were also unable to secure pit bulls with catch poles. Then police reported that the pit bulls ran toward a small Yorkshire terrier that was with its owner in a neighboring front yard. One of the pit bulls appeared to attack the Yorkie, and Ripon police shot the pit bull, which later died. The Yorkie survived.

The second pit bull was taken by authorities. The investigation into the circumstances regarding the dogs' escape as well as the attack on the small terrier are under investigation.
