Woodford dog attack probe launched by Moreton Bay Regional Council

AUSTRALIA -- The owner of a dog mauled at Woodford on Saturday has called on people with large dogs to ensure they are not a danger to others.

John Fulton said his shar pei named Miss Dolly was savaged by two ``bull arab-style'' dogs that escaped from their owner's car at the corner of Archer St and Peterson Rd about 9.45am.

She sustained a large tear, of about 10sqcm to the back of her neck, and a gash to one leg but will survive, albeit after more than $500 of veterinary treatment.

Mr Fulton said he had seen a man walking the dogs on leads and waited until they were put in their car before he let Miss Dolly out of his car. But the two big dogs jumped out of open windows and attacked her.

``One had hold of her by the back of the neck,'' he said.

``The owner of the dogs was screaming `no, no, no' trying to get his dogs off.''

The attack stopped only when the big dogs' owner punched the more aggressive of his animals in the head. Mr Fulton said that after asking if Miss Dolly was OK, the man drove off without leaving any details.

A Moreton Bay Regional Council spokesman said it was investigating and witnesses were being sought.

Under the council's local law a dog must be on a lead in public places and under the State Government's Animal Management Act owners must ensure their dog did not attack, cause fear, or menace people or animals.

``Council can declare an offending dog dangerous which results in higher registration fees and stringent conditions including muzzling and a secure enclosure,'' he said.

``On-the-spot fines of up to $750 can also apply, or up to $7500 if prosecuted in court.''

Compensation for medical costs was a civil matter.
