Neighbor, Clarice Irons, said Mesa took the baby girl and tried hiding from the dog underneath the trampoline.
Eventually, another neighbor heard her screams and ran over to the house with a handgun. He shot at he dog, eventually killing it, but also accidentally shot the grandmother.

"I could see the baby open her eyes. I could just see one eye, I could see her moving her eye and I could see her moving her mouth, so I tried to tell her grandma that she was alive," Irons explained.
Unfortunately, the injuries were so severe that baby Jazilyn did not survive the attack.
The grandmother is recovering from her injuries.
