Macon police officer shoots two pits after being bitten

GEORGIA -- A Macon police officer shot two dogs Thursday after being bitten by one dog and lunged at by the second.

A man living in the 3000 block of Pershing Avenue called police at about 4:30 p.m. after a pack of four dogs attacked him and his wife, who was in a wheelchair, while they were in their backyard, according to a police report released Friday.

The man told police he fought off the dogs using a pitch fork after they bit at his wife’s wheelchair.

When an officer arrived, the dogs charged at him in the yard and he sprayed them with pepper spray, according to the report.

The dogs ran away. The officer followed so he could tell animal control officers where to find the dogs. He stepped over a bent fence in the 4000 block of Lafayette Drive and the dogs rushed out from underneath a trailer, according to police.

The officer tried to use his pepper spray again, but a brown pit bull bit his hand. He shot the dog and another dog -- a black and white pit bull -- that lunged at him. The brown dog attacked the officer again and the officer shot it a second time, according to the report.

The black and white dog died. The brown dog ran away and wasn’t located. Animal control took one of the two remaining dogs, according to the report.
