SOUTH DAKOTA -- A pit bull attack on a Yorkshire terrier Thursday night led to the victim being put down.
A report was received at 8:34 p.m. of the attack in the 500 block of Green Street.
“Someone was walking their pit bull and a Yorkie came over to it,” said Lisa Brasel, the Yankton animal control officer. “The pit bull got away from the owner and attacked the Yorkie.”
The wounds it sustained were serious enough that the terrier was put down on the scene.
The pit bull was taken to the city pound for a 10-day observation period for signs of rabies. Once the observation period is over, Brasel said she plans to have the dog euthanized.
“If a dog bites a human or animal, we can classify it as a vicious animal,” she stated. “The dog then either needs to be euthanized or removed from the city limits.”
It is the third time in recent weeks that a pit bull has attacked another dog.
In one incident, a report was received that two pit bulls were attacking a golden retriever in the 1000 block of Walnut Street. The victim in that case had to undergo surgery.
The second incident involved a pit bull from the aforementioned case attacking a cocker spaniel in the 2300 block of Walnut Street. The victim in that case was taken to the veterinarian with a large gash on its neck.
The pit bull involved in both attacks was captured and caged at the pound. It has since been euthanized.
