North Carolina: Two men "chewed up pretty badly" by their two pit bulls. Had to beat one in the head with an axe handle. Owner of dogs, Chris Vaughn, says he wants the pit bulls back

NORTH CAROLINA -- Two men were injured Wednesday morning when they were attacked by two pit bulls in their home on the 5700 block of McDougal Drive, authorities said.

Jamel Washington, whose age was not available, and Joseph Askew, 32, suffered flesh wounds after being bitten between 7 and 7:30 a.m., said Dr. John Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Control.

Washington was about to let the two dogs outside when one dog bit the other dog, officials said. When the attacked dog turned around, it then bit Washington.

Washington called for Askew to help him. Askew came downstairs, grabbed an ax handle and struck the dog in an attempt to get it off Washington, Lauby said. The second dog then attacked Askew.

"They were chewed up pretty badly," he said.

The owner of the dogs, Christopher Vaughn, whose age was not available, was not there when the attack happened. Lauby said Vaughn responded to the home after the incident.

Animal Control officers came to the house and took the dogs. One was locked inside a bedroom, and the other was located under the home, Lauby said.

Animal Control will investigate to determine whether the dogs will be declared dangerous, Lauby said.

Vaughn told Animal Control that he wants the dogs returned, Lauby said.
