OHIO -- Mansfield police shot a pit bull early this morning after the dog attacked a man in his home in the 100 block of South Glenn.
Lt. Mike Higgins said the dog, which belonged to Marvin J. Ward's daughter, bit him in the arm, shoulder and groin around 2:50 a.m.
The Mansfield man was transported to MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital.
At 8 a.m., a nursing supervisor said he had been transported to Grant Medical Center, who could not immediately provide a condition report.
The girlfriend was not injured.
"Apparently (Ward) was arguing with his girlfriend and the dog started to attack," Higgins said.
Ward and his girlfriend retreated to a bedroom to hide, while the pit bull remained in the hall, Higgins said.
"When we got there, the dog wouldn't let us in the room to treat the man, leaving us no other choice," Higgins said, noting that the dog was shot with a shotgun.
Ward's daughter, Leteea Jones, whom the dog is registered to, lives at the Harmony House home and was not present.
Higgins said he believes the Richland County Dog Warden will handle any charges.
Warden Dave Jordan was called to collect the pit bull's body.
