FLORIDA -- Alan McCarty, a 31-year-old man from New Smyrna Beach man was busted for siccing a dog on an opossum, stomping on the opossum and then finally decapitating the animal with an ax, according to a news release from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
McCarty was arrested early Thursday morning after deputies allegedly found the decapitated opossum, along with blood stains and a bloody ax, outside the defendant’s home.
Deputies found the poor critter after responding to a 911 call regarding a disturbance at the home.
While the caller didn’t say anything to the dispatcher, the woman could be heard arguing with a man, according to the report.
Arriving deputies said they were told that McCarty had killed an opossum in an especially cruel way.
McCarty stuck the opossum in the dog kennel with their pet dog apparently hoping to spark an animal fight. When the animals wouldn't fight, McCarty got angry and stomped on the opossum, letting the wounded animal out of the cage so the dog could attack it, a witness reported
But when the dog still wouldn’t kill the opossum, McCarty decided to do it himself by striking it with an axe several times until its head was torn away from its body, the release stated.
McCarty tried to blame the incident on his girlfriend, reportedly telling deputies he killed the opossum to end its suffering after his girlfriend intentionally let her dog out and it attacked the animal.
