Girl recovering from dog attack may be released soon from hospital

NEW MEXICO -- KOB Eyewitness News 4 has learned that a four-year-old girl who was attacked by several dogs earlier this week may be heading home soon from the hospital.

The attack happened Monday afternoon in the backyard of her grandmother’s home near 98th and Central. The girl’s mother didn’t want to be identified but told KOB her daughter received about 75 stitches. Doctors also removed a dog’s tooth from her scalp.

The girl was playing in the open backyard when several neighbors’ dogs got out of their chain link fence through holes in the ground and viciously attacked the girl, biting her several times on her head and neck.

The girl’s mother ran out to help but said a husky bit her on her hand. The girl’s mother was not seriously wounded.

Police arrested the owners of the dogs on unrelated charges.

KOB was told there are five Husky and German Shepherd dogs quarantined at the animal shelter. It is unknown at this point whether the dogs will be put down or if the owners will be charged in this case.
