Denver man charged with letting dogs starve to death

COLORADO -- A Denver man was formally charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty for letting his dogs starve to death.

Chunie Smith, 31, was charged Monday with three counts of animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

According to the Denver Animal Control, the bodies of two American bulldogs belonging to Smith were found in a container in the alley behind the 1500 block of Groves Street. The two dogs presumably died of malnutrition.

Animal control later found another adult bulldog and two bulldog puppies in smith's yard, all alive but severely malnourished.

Smith is out on a $1,400 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Courtroom April 22.
