Elderly woman, dog attacked by 2 pit bulls in Ewa Beach

HAWAII -- Aawa Drive in Ewa Beach is a quiet road where many families feel safe to walk their dogs and with young children.

But for some people, what happened early Sunday morning, may have changed that.

“This is where I was, out this window. Directly across the street, I see two grey pit bulls and another animal,” witness Angela Kelly said. “One had its death grip on the neck and the other one was just attacking.”

 

Kelly says the pit bulls busted through their home’s gate and attacked a beagle and its 72-year-old owner.

Lisa Kesterson also witnessed the attack.

“I see the owner of the pit bulls and she’s beating the dogs with this long, huge, wooden stick and I said, ‘Oh my God,’” Kesterson said.

Kesterson, a former military dog trainer, grabbed a can of Lysol and began spraying the dogs in the face.
 

“You go for the eyes, the nose, and mouth and what that does is kill the dogs senses and throws their balance off, where they’re not gonna attack no more,” Kesterson said.

The pit bulls released their grip, but not quickly enough — the beagle was in shock and was rushed into emergency surgery.

The owner, who did not want to be identified, also suffered wounds to her hands and arms.

“When the dogs were attacking her dog, and she couldn’t get them off, and they were fighting these dogs, she said goodbye to her dog during the dog fight,” Kesterson said.

The beagle and its owner are expected to make a full recovery, but neighbors are still fighting to get the pit bulls removed.



“We feel like prisoners of our own home because of the fact that our young children can’t even play outside right now. We can’t even walk our dogs. We’re terrified,” Kesterson said.

The Humane Society issued two dangerous dog citations to the care giver and is trying to reach the owner.

The attorney for the neighborhood association says it’s likely that the dogs will be required to be removed from the property.
