Oxford police Lt. L.G. Owens said the uncle of 35-year-old Brandon Dontye Deramus called police Sunday and said his nephew had a dog in his backyard that might be dead. Owens said an officer went to a house on the 400 block of West Oak Street Sunday morning.
The officer discovered the pit bull, covered in flies, in a cage behind the home, Owens said. The dog was extremely malnourished and its ribs were showing, the lieutenant said.
The dog was having trouble breathing, Owens said. Deramus’ uncle took possession of the dog, he said.
Owens said today he was uncertain how long the dog was left in the cage or if it was still alive.
According to a police report, the charge against Deramus is considered a misdemeanor.
Deramus was released Thursday on a $2,000 bond from the Oxford City Jail. A court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 10.
