5-year-old victim of dog attack recovering

ALABAMA -- The 5-year-old victim of last Friday’s vicious dog attack in Jasper is recovering from injuries she sustained.

Janiah Hood is still hospitalized at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, but her condition has been upgraded to ‘good,’ Jasper Police Chief Connie Cooner Rowe said Tuesday. Her mother, April Thomas, says she still needs another surgery to rebuild an ear. (abc3340)

Hood suffered severe injuries to her head when she was attacked by the dog, which was described by Rowe as a pit bull.

Little Janiah hasn't said anything about the attack that took place near her home or the dog that broke away from an outdoor leash.

"She hasn't said anything, just 'I want to go home.' That's all I can get out of her, 'I want to go home,'" said Thomas.

The owner of the dog, who has not been identified but has been cooperating with police, agreed to have the animal euthanized, according to Rowe.

The Alabama Department of Health will be examining the remains as part of a standard procedure in these types of cases.
