Aggressive pit bull shot by a Brawley police officer

CALIFORNIA -- An aggressive pit bull was shot by a Brawley police officer Thursday morning in the 300 block of A Street, although the condition of the animal was not immediately available.

Police Chief Brett Houser said dispatchers received a report of an aggressive dog on the loose around 6:42 a.m. When police arrived, the dog made an aggressive move toward the officer, who discharged his weapon, Houser said.

The owner of the dog was located after the incident and the dog was taken to a veterinarian for treatment, he said.

Police will consider whether charges or citations will be issued against the owner of the pit bull.

Meanwhile, Houser said the situation could have been much worse considering the early-morning hour and the potential for children going to school to have encountered the animal.

He encouraged residents to report aggressive dogs to police as soon as possible.
