North Carolina: Woman fatally mauled when she goes to feed boyfriend's 2 pit bulls, deputies say

NORTH CAROLINA -- The funeral for a young North Carolina woman will be held on Saturday -- just days after she was mauled to death during the feeding of her boyfriend's dogs, authorities say.

Katherine Rene Atkins, age 25, was found dead in the backyard of a house in the 2700 block of Stable Hill Trail earlier this week, WFMY-TV reported.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says Atkins was attacked by the dogs and she was found lying dead near the fenced enclosure for the dogs on Monday evening.

Investigators told WFMY that the dogs were discovered running loose in the area when authorities arrived.

An event to "celebrate her life" will be held at noon on Saturday at First Christian Church in Kernersville.  The family will visit with friends immediately following the service at the church.

A native of Forsyth County, Atkins was a 2006 graduate of Kernersville Glenn High School.

Atkins worked as an Optometrist Technician with Garber Eye Associates.

"She was a loving caregiver and enjoyed helping others. People always said she never met a stranger, and was a friend to all who knew her," her obituary said.

A man who lives at the home says the dogs belong to his roommate. Atkins was his roommate's girlfriend.

WFMY-TV reported that the man told investigators Atkins fed the dogs because her boyfriend was running late from work.

According to Albert Jacobs' Facebook page, he and Atkins had been dating since 2008.

He also explained that both Atkins and her boyfriend raised the dogs since they were puppies.

A spokesperson from the sheriff's office said they don't know why the dogs turned on her.

Animal Control took both dogs into custody and euthanized them. The results from a necropsy - an animal autopsy - are pending.

The sheriff's office calls the incident a "terrible tragedy" and say that they don't plan on filing any criminal charges.

So far this year, pit bulls and pit bull mixes have killed at least 19 people across the U.S., more than a dozen of them younger than 8 years old.

Story of the Scorpion and the frog:
One day a scorpion asks a frog to carry him across the river. The frog, afraid of being stung during the trip declines helping the scorpion.

The scorpion argues that if it stung the frog, both would sink and he would also drown, so for his benefit he would never sting him.

The frog eventually agrees and carries the scorpion across the river until midway, the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both to drown.

As they slowly sink into the water the frog asks why he had stung him, crying out, "Now we shall both die!". The scorpion simply points out that, “I had no choice; it's in my nature“.
