OKLAHOMA -- Jackson County Memorial Hospital contacted Altus Police Thursday in reference to a 7-year-old girl that was being treated there for lacerations to her face as the result of a dog bite.
The location of the incident was determined to be in the 900 block of Hickory. Animal Control Supervisor Tony Lee responded to the address and made contact with the resident there, Kevin Lawrence.
Lawrence showed Master Officer Lee into the back yard where the attack was said to have taken place. The dog was there, chained up on a chain approximately 8 foot in length.
The child was reportedly bitten while the dog was chained up in the back yard. Although police say that the circumstances that led to the child being bitten are unknown at this time. It has been confirmed, however, that the child does not reside at the residence where she was bitten. She was reported to be at the residence playing with the children of the homeowner.
The dog, described as a Pit Bull / Chow mix, was seized by Animal Control Officers and taken to the Altus Animal Control Facility for the mandatory 10-day quarantine.
The owner of the dog was cited for (two counts) of No Rabies Vaccination, Cruelty to Animal (8 foot chain as opposed to a 10 foot chain, no water) and Vicious Animal.
According to police reports, within the last few months Lawrence had previously received citations for Animal at Large and No Rabies Vaccinations on both of his dogs.
The child that was bitten was taken by EMS to Lawton, and from there was flown to Oklahoma City for further treatment. It appeared at that time that her injuries were only bite lacerations and scratches.
