COLORADO -- For the past three days, it has been nonstop for Denver Animal Control.
Frigid temperatures have animal control officers zig-zagging the city, investigating claims of animal abuse or dogs being left outside for dangerously too long.
Officer Josh Rolfe says Thursday his office has received about 100 calls that he must check out, in person.
A typical day, he may only have a handful. “A lot of people treat them (pets) like their kids and you wouldn’t leave your kids outside,” says Rolfe, who has been with the Pound since 2010.
First-time violators may get a warning, with repeat offenders slapped with a fine of up to $999 and a year in jail.
