Boy, 7, attacked by pit bull in town with pit bull ban

Owner: "He's not a bad dog. Pit bulls get a bad rap."

MICHIGAN -- A 7-year-old is hospitalized after being mauled by his neighbor's pit bull in Ecorse.

The victim's mother tells FOX 2 she believes the dog shouldn't have been in the neighborhood in the first place.

Donald Sutphin was seen playing with some other children outside a neighbor's house before the attack happened.

The owner of the pit bull says the children were "banging on [her] fence with metal baseball bats and throwing rocks at [her] dog, and the little boy jumped into my yard after they were banging on the fence."

[If she truly saw all that happening why didn't she DO something about it? Tell the kids to stop? Bring her beloved pittie inside the house?]

That's when the pit bull attacked.

The attack was so severe Donald nearly lost his eye. Donald is being treated at Children's Hospital.

Ecorse police have issued a vicious animal ticket to the dog's owner Tuesday and animal control later took the dog. The dog will be quarantined for 10 days to determine if he is aggressive or not. The dog owner faces at least a $500 fine.

Donald's mother, Melissa Harbin, feels more action should be taken. She wishes the dog would be put down.

"They were agitating him. You know, he's a dog. He's doing what he's trained to do," says the owner.

Even more enraging to Harbin, Ecorse has an ordinance in effect since 2006 that bans pit bulls in the city.

"They told me that they have too many animal activist groups that are coming after them over the pit bull ban and they are afraid of being sued," Harbin says.

The pit bull's owner says she didn't know about the ban and frequently sees other people with pit bulls, including another neighbor.

  1. So this owner ADMITS that her dog was doing what it was trained to do. I'll be darned. Maybe it's true that pits that attack were trained to do it, even on a family member...
