Couple in Yadkin Co. face animal cruelty charges after neglected horse dies

NORTH CAROLINA -- A couple in Boonville are facing animal cruelty charges after a neglected horse in their care had to be euthanized.

Deputies responded to the home Donald Johnson, 60, and Sandra Johnson, 62, in May on reports of animal neglect.

The couple was advised to make changes specific to the care and maintenance of their horses.

When deputies returned to the property in June, the situation had worsened.

One of the neglected horses had to be euthanized due to lack of care.

The death of this animal elevated the animal cruelty to a felony level charge.

Both Johnsons were placed under a $15,000 secured bond each.
