New Bedford man charged with beating cat with bat

MASSACHUSETTS -- New Bedford is charged with animal cruelty after allegedly beating his girlfriends cat with an aluminum baseball bat.

 
 
The 4-year-old female cat named Smudge had to undergo surgery and had to have an eye removed.


Fifty-five-year old Manuel Erinna of New Bedford is charged with animal cruelty. A woman on scene told police that she was on the phone with Erinna, her ex-boyfriend, when the cat scratched her granddaughter and the girl started crying. When Erinna found out what happened he allegedly told the woman he was coming over to take care of the cat.


According to the woman he arrived with a baseball ball bat and closed the door to the room where the woman and her granddaughter were. The woman said she heard loud banging and came out to discover the cat had been struck with a baseball bat.

Erinna then allegedly fled the scene. Police located the suspect later at his home and arrested him.
