Deputies: Woman hoarding dogs in filth

MISSOURI -- Jackson County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Blue Summit woman after they say they found her home overrun with ill dogs who were living in filth.

Shirley Lafferty is facing charges for animal cruelty, neglect and abuse. She ran the Black Dog Rescue, which police call an unlicensed, illegal adoption service.

Seventeen dogs were seized. All had mange and two were seriously ill. Three dogs that the woman had and a Waldo dog care establishment where her daughter works were also seized.

A whiff of a noxious odor caught the attention of a Jackson County Sheriff's Office detective while in the neighborhood on an unrelated call. That smell launched a new investigation that also involved the Missouri's Animal Health Division.

"In the summer, a pig farm has no comparison to this," said Helen Holmes, whose sister lives next to the home in question. "It was bad. It was horrendous."

How bad? Feces covered the floor. The house has been condemned.

Holmes said the woman seemed attached to the dogs.

"She wouldn't let my niece adopt one of the dogs because my niece told her that the dog would be kept outside, and she didn't want the dog to be outside in the wintertime," Holmes said. "So she obviously cared about those animals. I just think she overdid."
