Arturo Marques Aleman, 63, and Erasmo Nunez, 55, were booked into San Patricio County Jail on Nov. 19 on charges of cruelty to livestock animal — a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail — after a horse named Yanaha was found with large wounds on their property in Gregory in August.
Rockport Horse Rescue, called by the San Patricio County Sheriff's Office Aug. 23 to treat the animal, detailed the injuries on their Facebook page:
"The largest gaping wound was the size of a football. She was cut from her anus to down in between her legs. All of her exterior genital parts were simply gone. She had some leg injuries, some of which we believe were from laying out in the field for weeks without treatment and others which we believe were from tying her up in order to mutilate her in the manner they did."Yanaha underwent surgery to allow her to defecate and urinate, while workers at the rescue spent four to six hours each day cleaning her and helping her evacuate feces, the rescue said in the post.
The horse was unable to lay down, according to the rescue.
She died Oct. 11.
San Patricio County District Attorney Mike Welborn told KZTVin October that Yanaha's owner, then unnamed, told investigators that she was caught in a fence, causing her genitals to be ripped out.
The owners, Aleman and Nunez, were indicted by a grand jury on Nov. 13, according to thehorse.com.
Alemam faces two counts and Nunez faces one. Each have posted bond, according to jail records on VINELink.
Michelle Hird of Rockport Horse Rescue told KZTV, "Watching her fight so hard to survive was hard. She was not a quitter. She wanted to live and she fought and fought."
