Ricky Gee jailed after pleading guilty to animal cruelty

KENTUCKY -- Ricky Gee, 33, of US 60 East, Morehead, originally pleaded not guilty to animal abuse charges after being accused of leaving animals in conditions that caused injury to one Doberman and death to another.

A jury trial was set for Feb. 19 but last week Gee changed his plea to guilty and is now in the Rowan County Detention Center.

Rowan County Attorney Cecil Watkins said that Gee will serve a minimum of 90 days.

“It is a 12-month sentence and he must serve 90 days before he is eligible for probation,” said Watkins.

Gee's two-year probation agreement stipulates that he must have no violation of the law, must not own any animals and must forfeit any ownership entitlement to the living Doberman that has been named “Lola” by Saving the Animals of Rowan County (STAR) which has been nursing the animal back to health.

“Lola” weighted about 34 pounds when she was originally rescued by STAR. She should weigh about 70 and has since gained 25 pounds. She had nearly no muscle mass and was severely anemic but now has muscle definition and is completely clear of anemia.

Beth and Kevin Bass with STAR are fostering the dog.

“She could barely lift her head when we got her and now her coat is glossy and she is so energetic and lovable,” said Beth. “It's been an amazing transformation and is amazing what love and food can do for an animal.”

Beth added that “Lola” was healthy enough to be spayed but still needs to gain about 15 pounds to be at the desired weight for her breed. All of the open wounds on the dog have healed but some have scarred and will remain hairless.
