Mighty, one of a half dozen llamas and five dozen alpacas at Borderline Farms, about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte, N.C., was 10 years old. Half of her body was found in a pond on the farm, the second half was found on a nearby dirt path.

"It was a horrible death," said Tammy Limer, president of the farm. "She was one of my pets."
Cody Wyatt Bray, 22; Alexander Samuel Clark, 20; and James Robert Lee, 18, were charged Saturday with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, second-degree trespassing and cruelty to animals in connection with the Wednesday death. They are in Union County jail on varying bond amounts from $2,000 to $10,000 and had their first court appearance Monday.

"I know these animals well enough to know that she laid there and screamed," Limer said. She said Mighty died protecting her herd; her llamas are there to protect her 60 alpacas, which she shears once a year for fur.
Since the incident, Limer said her animals won't go toward the back of the farm where the men attacked Mighty.
"The animals stay up here. They won't go back there," she said. "It bothers me. It makes me mad."
