TEXAS -- A black Labrador was shot twice and killed by a Corpus Christi police officer Monday after a man reported being bitten by the animal.
The man, 36, said he was bitten by the dog at about 8:30 a.m. at Greenwood Drive and Tarlton Street. When officers arrived, the man pointed out two dogs, a black Lab and a pit bull mix, said Senior Officer Kirk Stowers.
As the officers were waiting for Animal Control Services to arrive, the dogs went into a person's front yard in an aggressive manner, Stowers said. Senior Officer Travis Pace said the dog charged a resident who had to get in a vehicle for protection.
An officer followed the dogs on foot to keep people away from them, and the Lab turned on the officer, growled and starting running toward him. He shot at the dog once, and the dog kept charging, so the officer shot at least one more time, Stowers said. The pit bull ran off and hasn't been recovered.
The Lab was dead when Animal Care Services arrived, and they picked it up, Pace said. It will be sent to Austin for disease testing, which is normal protocol.
Stowers said the case will go under review by Internal Affairs, which will call in the involved officers for recorded statements on what happened.
The man who was bitten was treated in an ambulance at the scene.
