Three injured in two separate dog attacks in Sydney's west

AUSTRALIA -- Three people have been taken to hospital after being viciously mauled in two separate dog attacks in Sydney's western suburbs.

Trevor Gearin was walking his Fox Terrier Gemma in Cranebrook when they were attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Witnesses told 9NEWS the Staffie latched onto Gemma's throat, and when the grandfather tried to pick her up, he was knocked to the ground and bitten on his arm and hand.

Jacob McIlrick heard the 79-year-old's screams and ran onto the street with a pool cue to fend off the dog.

The owner of the dog that allegedly attacked the pair told the victim's family his children left the gate open.

The incident occurred just 24 hours after a young couple was mauled and seriously injured in a separate attack at Castlereagh.

They had arrived home to find two dogs attacking their chickens. When the 26-year-old tried to intervene she was pinned to the ground and bitten on the face, arms and chest.

Her partner was attacked when he tried to save her. They both underwent surgery this afternoon.

One of the dogs involved was put down, but authorities are still looking for the second animal.

The dog's owner could face criminal charges.
