OHIO -- Following the reported attack of a 9-year-old girl, a Hamilton dog was put under rabies quarantine, a protocol move in dog bite situations, according to Butler County dog warden Kurt Merbs.
The pit bull's fate wasn't to be put down, Merbs said, and the owner's penalty was a citation for failure to control the dog.
The dog, who police said looked like a pit bull, was in its own yard and tied down, Merbs said. The dog was being harassed by children, being sprayed in the face with water until he broke free and attacked the girl.
The dog bit off part of the girl's face, but because of the circumstances the dog would not be confiscated.
"If the dog's running loose, that would be an issue we would deal with," Lt. Michael Waldeck of said. "But from what we understand, the dog was in its own yard. It was chained up."
The only loose end in the case was to confirm that Scrappy was rabies-free which would clear the 9-year-old girl of the possibility of contracting the disease.
The dog was ordered to stay in the owner's home.
The dog owner's mother told WCPO that her daughter snuck the dog out of the house in the night. However, the bite victim's family said they saw the owner load the dog into the car, leave, and then return without the dog.
The 9-year-old may now have to undergo rabies shots in addition to reconstructive surgery on her face, Merbs said.
Merbs said he has still not made contact with the dog's owner, and if he cannot by the end of the day Wednesday, she could be arrested.
