Long history with pit bulls seized after attack that killed little dog

WISCONSIN -- Two pit bulls involved in an attack that killed a Bichon Frise- Shih Tzu mix Monday morning in Monroe have been seized by authorities.

The Monroe Police Department said the dogs were taken Tuesday from a home in the 2400 block of Seventh Street. The two pit bulls will be confined at the Green County Humane Society in Monroe until a court hearing.

Jeff Buehler, the owner of Buddy, the dog that was killed, told News 3 that his wife was walking Buddy at about 7 a.m. when the dog was attacked on Seventh Street. The dog was taken to a veterinarian's office where it died.

Police Chief Fred Kelley said it looks like Buddy's owner did nothing wrong, and the owner of the pit bulls could be facing citations or charges.

Police said the smaller dog weighed about 18 pounds and the pit bulls weighed about 90 pounds each.

Police said that, according to records, the same pit bulls attacked another dog off their property in August 2013, causing non-fatal injuries.  In that incident, the owner of the dogs was cited for allowing the dogs to run at large.

In another incident in October 2012, the pit bulls were at large and went after another dog, police said.  The other dog was not injured, and its owner didn't pursue charges.

Monday's attack is more severe, so legal action is likely, according to police.

The owners could be cited for allowing the dogs to be at large, or police could issue a referral to criminal court for allowing the dogs to injure another dog off their property, which could lead to an order for the destruction of the dogs.
