Authorities searching for person who stabbed and shot meek Border Collie

TENNESSEE -- A therapy dog, who works with patients who are mentally ill, spent most of the weekend recovering after she was attacked in Hamilton County.

The incident happened last week in Ooltewah, a suburb of Chattanooga.

Katherine Zwitter, Mama Dog's owner, said she got out of her leash, and was only gone for some 20 minutes when she came hobbling back.

"She came back a bloody mess. I thought she had been hit by car,” said Zwitter.

Zwitter quickly rushed the dog to the veterinarian, where they discovered she had actually been shot, stabbed, and beaten.

Mama Dog was treated and is now back home recovering. She is a certified therapy animal that works with mentally ill patients.

However, Zwitter worries she may have a hard time trusting people because this wasn't the first time she had been abused.

“I hate that I found her and she was so badly abused and it took me a year to get her socialized, and now being shot and stabbed,” she added. “What this could do to her?”

The Humane Educational Society of Hamilton County was called in to investigate the attack.
