Family's pet horse stolen and slaughtered for meat

FLORIDA -- Thunder, a 23-year-old bay gelding horse, must have stood out for his size.

He was the biggest horse on Sandra and Jeffrey Fobb’s Homestead property and the only one stolen out of three over the weekend, said Miami-Dade Detective Marjorie Eloi.

“This wasn't some horse on a farm,” Eloi said. “This was someone’s pet.”

Eloi said Monday night the horse was found dead and slaughtered for horse meat.

“We are heartbroken,” said Jeffrey Fobb, Sandra’s husband. “He was a good horse. He was unafraid of people, which is probably why he was stolen.”

Thunder, who Jeffrey Fobb said was taken on a ride about once a week, disappeared sometime between 8 p.m. Saturday and 7:45 a.m. Sunday from the 26000 block of Southwest 147th Avenue.

Police say the fence was cut on the east side of the property and there were fresh tire tracks found nearby.

Richard Couto, founder and lead investigator of Animal Rescue Mission, said that stealing horses is all too common.

Couto said many believe horse meat can heal cancer and enhance one’s sexual drive. He said horse meat sells for $4 to $40 a pound.

The Fobb family was distraught Monday night.

“How do you have any comfort in an area where people don’t have any care for people’s pets?” he said. “It’s sad.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective E. Mathis at 305-252-8311 or the Agricultural Patrol Unit at 786-218-8344.
