In a marriage settlement agreement filed in Fauquier County Circuit Court on July 13, Anthony Goland agreed to pay his now ex-wife Anne Shumate (aka Anne Shumate Goland aka Anne Goland aka Anne Shumate Williams aka Anne Williams) more than $1.7 million over three years.
Part of the agreement included paying down the mortgage on the Orange property, so Shumate could keep it.
Shumate is currently behind bars at the Central Virginia Regional Jail on 27 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
Shumate and Goland married in July 2009, according to court records. The divorce was final on July 29, according to a Fauquier Circuit Court clerk.
Goland works for the international business consulting firm McKinsey & Company. He and several board members of Peaceable Farm were summoned to Orange County General District Court for a civil hearing Wednesday morning on seizing the animals.
None of the board members appeared, and according to Orange County Commonwealth's Attorney Diana Wheeler, those hearings will be rescheduled as the investigation into Shumate continues.
"We have an ongoing investigation and so we anticipate there will be additional charges," said Wheeler. "We've just begun the financial investigation, so I don't really have a timeline on that but we do expect there to be other charges."
Goland's divorce attorney, Joseph Condo, said he did not believe his client had been to the Orange County property since July 2014. He said his client fulfilled his financial obligations, and there was "no way" Goland knew the animals were suffering.
Shumate's attorney, Thomas Purcell, did not immediately return a call requesting comment.
