Mailman Saves Girl from Vicious Dog Attack

SOUTH CAROLINA -- It took seven staples in her head to sew up serious bite wounds, but Tuesday a 7-year-old Rock Hill girl is alive after a vicious dog attack, all because of the heroic actions of a postal carrier.

With little time to react, mail carrier Mark Pizzo saw a dog go from friendly to vicious while attacking 7-year-old Kayden White near Park View Court two weeks ago.

"It had her by the top of her head by the braids like a rope toy and it was pulling at her head," said Pizzo.

The dog continued attacking the little girl and tried dragging her underneath a nearby trampoline. The postman knew he had to do something and do it quickly.

"So I struck the dog," said Pizzo. "I punched the dog like four or five times, I don't even remember and it finally let go of her."

The girl's mother said the dog belonged to a neighbor and has been put down. She believes her only daughter would have died that day without Pizzo's actions.

"If it was not for him, she probably wouldn't be here," said Shaquitta White.

Tuesday, the U.S. Postal Service presented Pizzo with the Hero Award, a gesture he's humble about, and one most deserving.

"I'm grateful and thankful, but it's not necessary," explained Pizzo. "I just did what I thought was right."

The girl's mother said Kayden went back to school Tuesday and has had the staples removed.
