TEXAS -- The Christmas spirit of a 7-year-old boy mourning the loss of his dog has been renewed thanks to one state trooper.
It was on Thursday afternoon when Blake Pankonien's dog, Cowboy, was hit and killed by a truck outside their Axtell home.
By the time neighbors came to alert the family, the perpetrator was gone.
"He hit the dog so hard the side step came off of his truck," Blake's mom, Alison, said.
Blake was devastated by the death of Cowboy.
One of Alison's friends notified two state troopers who soon came to speak with her.
The officers took the side step of the truck and told the mom that they would look further into the incident and also patrol around their neighborhood.
"I told them that this was really sad because Blake is home sick and now he said that this is the worst Christmas ever," Alison said.
The troopers did not take Blake's sadness lightly.
Less than one week later, Alison came home to find a note on her door along with a $50 gift card to Toys 'R Us from one of the officers, Francisco Velez.
Here's the note he left:
Hello ma'am, this is Trooper Velez, the officer that came to your call about your dog.
I'm sorry I was not able to find the culprit. Myself and Trooper Manning patrolled close to your house to make an impact. I hope things get better.
You said your boy was talking about this being the worst Christmas ever. No boy should ever feel like that.
I've attached a Toys 'R Us gift card so he can get himself a video game or toy.
Hopefully it changes his mind.
Trooper Francisco Velez
Alison said she wanted to let News Channel 25 know about their story because officers don't get enough credit for the good work that they do.
