Iowa: Michael Cain, 38, faces animal neglect charges for dumping litter of puppies to die

IOWA -- Lee County Sheriff Jim Sholl confirmed the arrest of Michael J. Cain, 38, Montrose, at 8:40 p.m. Saturday for up to nine counts of animal neglect.

Cain is alleged to have dumped a litter of day-old puppies in a dumpster last week in Montrose. PAW shelter in Fort Madison has been providing around-the-clock care for the remaining puppies.

One of the nine puppies was dead when the litter was found, and three have died since being rescued.

According to Sholl, the animal neglect charge is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in a correctional facility.

If Cain is found guilty, the judge can suspend or reduce the sentence.
