Ohio: Lorain couple throw their nursing mama dog outside, then call police to complain that it's a stray trying to get into their house. She was trying to get back to her puppies.

OHIO -- Two Lorain residents could face charges of cruelty to companion animals, abandoning animals and falsification stemming from an April 14 incident at their home, according to a Lorain police report.

The pair called police and dog warden April 13 to complain about a stray pit bull that was attempting to get into their home in the 800 block of West 17th Street and would not leave their porch, the report said. Police were not able to remove the dog until April 14.

The police report described the dog as quite aggressive; snarling and growling at Lorain police officer Richard Broz, who was dispatched to capture the canine.

The dog was later identified as a female brindle pit bull mix named Kera.

According to the report, the Lorain County Dog Warden Nelson Delgado, along with Dr. Tom Wood of the Lorain Animal Clinic, determined the pit bull had a litter of puppies a few days earlier.

Denise Willis, a humane officer at the Friendship Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road in Elyria, received two tips about the incident which led her to believe there was more to the story than just a stray dog.

The tips explained that according to a now deleted Facebook post, Kera belonged to the homeowners and had given birth only days before, Willis said.

Willis, Delgado and Broz met back at the West 17th Street home. One of the suspects confessed to lying about their relationship to the dog and presented its nine puppies which were only five days old.

The suspect explained that they owned Kera, but when their one-year-old child got close to the puppies, Kera attempted to bite the child, according to the report. At that point, the suspects put Kera outside and called the police when she tried to return to her puppies.

According to the report, the suspect said that she had been feeding the puppies regular store bought milk. The report also said that this would not provide the puppies with proper nutrition.

The suspect signed a surrender of Kera and the puppies and Willis took them to the Friendship APL, the report said.

Broz requested that the suspects face criminal charges, according to the report.

Kera and her puppies are doing well and are preparing for transport to a foster home, Willis said.
